            The book details the role of the Union Artillery during the War, from the enlistment of Battery D, 1st NY Lt. Artillery through the Battle of Chattanooga. After enlisting at Watertown, NY, Osborn recruited men for Battery D from Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Lewis Counties, NY.

 

            Osbornís observations on command decisions and generalship and his appraisals of McClellan, Hooker, Sherman, Grant and others are particularly insightful.
